The City of Bend takes its name from "Farewell Bend," a designation used by early pioneers to describe the location where the town was first platted along the Deschutes River. It has grown to become the fifth-largest metropolitan area in Oregon and the largest populated city east of the Cascades in the state. Its population of around 100,000 places it as a mid-sized town, however, the scale of its buildings and streets reveals its very recent small-town past.
